About Vulturașul: aerobatics from Costinești

DTO Vulturașul is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. The experience flights you can buy on this site are part of the same operation: the same aircraft, the same standards, the same pilot.

What DTO Vulturașul is

DTO stands for Declared Training Organisation — a flight training organisation registered with the aviation authority, operating to an approved training programme, with qualified instructors and aircraft maintained to the applicable requirements. For aerobatics, DTO Vulturașul is the first such organisation registered in Romania.

In practice, this means aerobatics is not an occasional sideline for us but our core business: written procedures, standard briefings, and a flying discipline applied in exactly the same way to a training lesson and to an experience flight bought as a gift.

Who takes you up

Flights are flown by a professional pilot certified for aerobatics with a passenger on board. The rating for this type of flying is separate from an ordinary licence and is kept current through recurrent training — it is not something you earn once and hold forever.

From the passenger's side it looks simpler: someone who explains every manoeuvre before take-off, who asks how you are feeling during the flight, and who stops the aerobatics the moment you ask. Almost everyone climbs into the aircraft with a trace of nerves. The pilot's job is to turn that into confidence before the propeller starts turning.

Flight rules we do not negotiate: an aircraft approved for aerobatics, a 5-point harness for the passenger, a full briefing before take-off, and flying only in suitable weather. If the weather does not allow it, the flight is postponed — and rescheduling is free.

The aircraft: an aerobatic trainer, not a competition aircraft

We fly a Robin R2160 (Alpha Sport) — an aircraft designed specifically as an aerobatic trainer. It is not an ordinary aeroplane adapted for aerobatic figures, but one built from the outset for people to learn aerobatics on. It is certified in the utility and aerobatic categories, with limits of +6/−3G.

Two details of the design completely change the passenger's experience:

Why this matters on a first experience: for someone getting into an aerobatic aircraft for the first time, sitting next to the pilot and being able to talk naturally throughout the flight is the difference between “something happened to me” and “I understood what was happening”. And on the Full Aerobatic flight, the dual controls allow the passenger to take the control stick and fly the manoeuvres themselves, guided by the pilot, who remains pilot in command throughout the flight.

Competition aerobatic aircraft used for passenger flights are usually built with tandem seating — the passenger sits behind the pilot — and belong to a higher performance category. This is not a comparison of quality, but a difference of configuration and purpose: one is made for competition, the other for training.

Home base: Costinești Airfield

We operate from Costinești Airfield in Constanța county, a few kilometres from the sea. It is a location with a practical advantage for aerobatics: airspace that allows complete figures and, under the wing, the coastline, the beaches of southern Romania and open sea all the way to the horizon.

The flying season runs from spring to autumn, when the weather allows aerobatics to be flown safely. We operate Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 20:00, and every flight is reconfirmed for weather at least 3 days in advance.

Touring the country

Not everyone can make it to the coast, so the team travels periodically — usually every 2 years — to other cities in Romania for Full Aerobatic and Introduction to Aerobatics flights. In 2025, Vulturașul visited Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Timișoara.

Tour dates are announced on Instagram and TikTok. If you are waiting for a date in your city, follow those accounts — that is where announcements go up first.

What we offer

Three types of flight, all available as a gift card: Smooth Flight (20 minutes of flight, 30 minutes total experience, smooth manoeuvres over the coast), Introduction to Aerobatics flight (30 minutes of flight, 40 minutes total experience, loops and rolls, 3–4G) and Full Aerobatic flight (30 minutes of flight, 45 minutes total experience, including spins and inverted flight, 4–6G).

What each one includes, and why the prices differ, is explained on the how much an aerobatic flight costs. The participation requirements are the same for all of them: minimum age 10 (minors with both parents present), maximum 100 kg, no previous flight experience needed.
