Things to do in Mangalia: an activity guide

The southern coast of the Black Sea, near Mangalia, seen from the plane during the climb

Mangalia is the kind of town many people drive through on their way to the resorts or to Vama Veche without stopping. That's a mistake: it's the southernmost town on the Romanian coast, it stands right on top of a Greco-Roman fortress over two millennia old, and within a few kilometres it brings together a wide beach, a marina, a 16th-century mosque, a stud farm and several small resorts with their own personality.

Mangalia in brief

Mangalia is the southernmost municipality on the coast, a short distance from the Bulgarian border. The town was built over Callatis, a Greek colony founded in antiquity and later turned into a Roman town, so part of its charm lies in the mix of ancient history and seaside resort. Besides the beach, Mangalia is known for the sulphurous water springs, used in spa treatments, and for the fact that administratively it also includes the string of small resorts to the north: Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, Cap Aurora, Neptun and Olimp.

Unlike a pure resort, Mangalia runs all year round: it has a permanent population, a port, schools and a town life that doesn't vanish in September. That means restaurants and services open outside peak season too, and an atmosphere less „theme-park” than on the northern coast.

The beach, the seafront and the port

Mangalia's beach is wide and long, with fine sand, and usually less crowded than the beaches in the busy resorts to the north. Continuing from it, the seafront is the natural place for an evening stroll, open towards the sea and the port. It's a simple route, good for a morning run or a gentle walk once the sun eases off.

The marina (the marina) in Mangalia is where short boat trips and pleasure-craft outings set off from in season. You can also see yachts and fishing boats here and eat with a view over the water. Sea-outing offers change from year to year and from one operator to another, so it's best to check on the spot, in season.

Mangalia's great advantage is its density: beach, ancient history, port and spa treatments, all within walking distance of one another. You rarely find so many different things in such a small town.

Callatis and the Archaeology Museum

The historic heart of the town is the Callatis fortress. Founded by Greek (Dorian) colonists in antiquity and later integrated into the Roman world, Callatis was an important port city on the Black Sea. Traces of the enclosure walls and the ancient buildings can be seen at several points in the town, sometimes right next to blocks of flats and hotels — it's one of Mangalia's quirks, a modern town built over an ancient one.

For context, it's worth visiting The Callatis Archaeology Museum, which brings together artefacts found in the area: pottery, inscriptions, coins, funerary objects and evidence of everyday life in the ancient city. It's the place that helps you understand what you then see on the ground, when you come across a fragment of two-thousand-year-old wall. Opening hours and prices change by season, so check before your visit.

The Esmahan Sultan Mosque

The Esmahan Sultan Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Romania, built in the Ottoman period (16th century). It's a modest building in size but steeped in history, surrounded by a small old cemetery and a fountain. The place of worship is still in use, so visit it with due respect: keep in mind the prayer times, decent dress and the posted access rules. It's one of the most visible pieces of evidence of Dobrogea's multicultural heritage.

Other sights in and around the town

🐎

The Mangalia Stud Farm

One of the best-known stud farms in the country, with a tradition of breeding pedigree horses. A pleasant place to visit, especially for families with children. Check access and opening hours beforehand.

🐠

The Aquarium

The aquarium in the seafront area displays species of fish and aquatic fauna, from the Black Sea to exotic species. A good option for a cooler day or with children.

♨️

The sulphurous baths

Mangalia has springs of mesothermal sulphurous water, used for decades in spa treatments. The treatment centre operates outside the beach season too.

⛵

Boat trips

In season, short sea outings leave from the marina. Offers vary from year to year, so check directly at the marina.

The surrounding resorts: Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, Neptun, Olimp

North of Mangalia stretches a string of small resorts, each with its own character. They are close to one another and easy to visit in a day, especially by car or bike:

  • Saturn — the closest to Mangalia, practically attached to the town; a wide beach and easy access.
  • Venus — a compact resort, with hotels close to the beach and a lively atmosphere in season.
  • Jupiter and Cap Aurora — an area with pleasant beaches and a small port; Cap Aurora is the smallest and quietest of them all.
  • Neptun — probably the best known, with lakes, a park, lush vegetation and a more substantial tourist offering.
  • Olimp — adjoining Neptun, with a gently sloping beach and hotels lined up along the sea.

If you want to see more of the southern coast beyond the beach, we've gathered ideas in the guide about activities on the Black Sea coast, and for the more bohemian atmosphere on the Bulgarian border, see what to do in Vama Veche.

🎁 A gift idea to bring home

A flight gift card is valid for 24 months — it doesn't have to be used on the same holiday.

The aerobatic flight at Vama Veche Airfield

Mangalia is about 10 km from Vama Veche Airfield (Limanu commune), the closest town to the airfield. In practice, if you spend your holiday in Mangalia or the surrounding resorts, an aerobatic flight over the coast is an activity that's easy to combine with the rest of your schedule: a short drive south, a morning experience, and you're back on the beach by midday.

Vulturașul operates from Vama Veche Airfield and is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. The flights are operated by a certified professional pilot, in an aircraft approved for aerobatics and with a five-point harness. You don't need any previous experience: the pilot explains everything before take-off, and the scenery is the very coast you've just explored from the ground.

🛩️

Smooth Flight

A pleasure flight along the coast, with smooth manoeuvres and no aerobatic figures. Forces stay close to 1G. Ideal for a first flight in a small aircraft, or if you are only after the view. See the package.

⚡

Introduction to Aerobatics

Your first real figures — loops, rolls and steep banked turns — at 3–4G. The middle option, for anyone who wants the adrenaline in a controlled dose. See the package.

🦅

Full Aerobatic

30 minutes of flight (from engine start to engine shutdown) and 45 minutes for the whole experience, safety briefing included. Loops, rolls, spins and inverted flight, at 4–6G. See the package.

🎁

Gift card

Any of the flights can be bought as a gift card, valid for 24 months from purchase. Handy if you want to surprise someone who's with you on holiday in Mangalia. See the gift card.

What to know beforehand

  • ✓
The minimum age is 10. Children can fly from the age of 10, with both parents present at the airfield.
  • ✓
The maximum weight is 100 kg. That is a technical limit of the aircraft, not a preference.
  • ✓
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00. In summer, the morning slots usually have the calmest air.
  • ✓
The weather is reconfirmed. The team contacts you at least 3 days ahead to confirm flying conditions. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the flight is rescheduled.
  • ✓
A short drive from Mangalia. Vama Veche Airfield is about 10 km to the south, easy to reach by car.

Prices change from season to season, so we don't put them in articles: see the current packages and prices on the products page or the detailed breakdown on how much an aerobatic flight costs. Bookings are made through the booking page, and the practical details are gathered under good to know.

Practicalities: where to stay, what to eat, when to come

  • Accommodation: Mangalia has hotels, guesthouses and apartments, and the surrounding resorts (Saturn–Olimp) add a wide range of seaside hotels. Outside peak season it's easier to find a place.
  • Food: fish and seafood, Dobrogean cuisine, and also restaurants open all year, because the town doesn't live on tourism alone.
  • Season: June and September are pleasant for an uncrowded beach; for the spa treatments, the centre operates off-season too.
  • Days without the beach: the museum, the aquarium, the mosque and the stud farm are good options when the weather isn't on your side. More ideas in the article about activities on the coast.

In conclusion: Mangalia deserves more than a stop in passing. With a beach, a port, ancient history at every step and the surrounding resorts a few kilometres away, you can easily fill a few days — and for a completely different experience, the airfield at Vama Veche is just a short drive to the south.
