Vama Veche: what to do during the day, once you've had enough beach

Vama Veche has an amusing problem: its reputation is so bound up with nights, music and the beach that almost nobody tells you what to do there between 11am and 7pm, when the sun is fierce and you've already had your fill of lying on the sand. The answer is that there's plenty to do — most of it just happens to be a few kilometres outside the village.

The rhythm of the day in Vama

Vama runs on a shifted timetable. People sleep late, drift onto the beach around midday, eat at unpredictable hours, and the evenings stretch on. If you adapt to that rhythm, your useful day effectively starts at 4pm. If you don't, you get an advantage: early in the morning the beach is empty and quiet, and the roads to the sights nearby are clear.

A good way to organise a stay in Vama is to sort your days into two categories: village days, when you don't move beyond the beach and the terraces, and outing days, when you take the car for a few hours. Alternating between them is the difference between a holiday that feels full and one that feels repetitive.

The beach and the water

The beach at Vama Veche is largely open, with no endless rows of sunloungers — the main reason people come back year after year. The sand is coarser than further north along the coast, and the water shelves gently. The central stretch, in front of the terraces, is the busiest; head south towards the border or north towards 2 Mai and it empties out quickly.

The sea here is the same Black Sea with its irregular habits: warm water for days on end, then a sudden drop when the offshore wind changes direction. Don't count on yesterday's temperature. And, as everywhere on the coast, watch the warning flag and take care on days with big waves — rip currents exist even on beaches that look calm.

Vama Veche isn't a resort, it's a village. That means less tourist infrastructure and more freedom — but also that the things to do have to be sought out in the surrounding area, not in the centre.

A day in 2 Mai

2 Mai is a few kilometres north and is, in many ways, the quieter version of Vama. It has a wide beach, a small fishing harbour, old houses and a fishing-village feel that has survived better than you'd expect. It's where people go for lunch, when Vama gets too hot and too crowded.

You can walk along the beach between 2 Mai and Vama Veche — a few kilometres with the water beside you the whole way. It's one of the simplest and best things to do in the area, and it costs nothing.

What to see in southern Dobrogea

🏺

Mangalia

The remains of the Greek colony of Callatis, the archaeology museum, the Esmahan Sultan Mosque (one of the oldest in Romania) and the marina. About 10 km north.

🕳️

Limanu

The village has a well-known cave with long galleries and a history thick with legend. It isn't set up for mass tourism and access is restricted — check before you go rather than setting off assuming you can get in.

🌲

Nature reserves in the area

Southern Dobrogea has protected areas with sub-Mediterranean vegetation, such as Hagieni Forest. Good for short walks and birdwatching, outside the hottest hours.

🚤

Boat trips

Short sea trips run from the coastal harbours in season. What's on offer varies from year to year, so ask locally.

If you fancy a longer drive, Constanța is less than an hour north and deserves a full day: the old peninsula, the restored Casino, the museums, the aquarium. We've set out the options in our guide to things to do on the Romanian coast.

Activity and water sports

  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing — the southern coast gets steady wind on many afternoons; schools and hire centres operate seasonally.
  • SUP and kayaking — best in the morning, when the sea is calm.
  • Cycling — the roads between Vama Veche, 2 Mai and Limanu are short and fairly flat, and a bike solves the parking problem too.
  • Diving — there are dive centres along the coast running trips; visibility in the Black Sea varies, so ask about conditions in advance.
  • Running — on the beach, early in the morning, between Vama and 2 Mai. The simplest route in the area.

🎁 A gift idea to bring home

A flight gift card is valid for 24 months — it doesn't have to be used on the same holiday.

Aerobatic flights from Costinești Airfield

From Vama Veche to Costinești Airfield is roughly 35–40 kilometres north — about half an hour's drive, which is exactly right for a morning activity that doesn't eat into the rest of your day. It's probably the only option in the area that has nothing to do with either the beach or the terraces.

Vulturașul operates from Costinești Airfield and is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. Flights are made with a certified professional pilot, in an aircraft approved for aerobatics and fitted with a five-point harness. No previous experience is needed: the pilot talks you through everything before take-off.

🛩️

Smooth Flight

A pleasure flight along the coast, with smooth manoeuvres and no aerobatic figures. Forces stay close to 1G. Ideal for a first flight in a small aircraft, or if you are only after the view. See the package.

Introduction to Aerobatics

Your first real figures — loops, rolls and steep banked turns — at 3–4G. The middle option, for anyone who wants the adrenaline in a controlled dose. See the package.

🦅

Full Aerobatic

30 minutes of flight (from engine start to engine shutdown) and 45 minutes for the whole experience, safety briefing included. Loops, rolls, spins and inverted flight, at 4–6G. See the package.

🎁

Gift card

Any of the flights can be bought as a gift card, valid for 24 months from purchase. Handy if you want to surprise someone who is on holiday with you. See the gift card.

What to know beforehand

  • The minimum age is 10. Children can fly from the age of 10, with both parents present at the airfield.
  • The maximum weight is 100 kg. That is a technical limit of the aircraft, not a preference.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00. In summer, the morning slots usually have the calmest air.
  • The weather is reconfirmed. The team contacts you at least 3 days ahead to confirm flying conditions. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the flight is rescheduled.
  • Not only at Costinești. The team travels to other cities around the country from time to time; dates are announced on Instagram and TikTok.

Prices change from season to season, so we don't put them in articles: see the current packages and prices on the products page or the detailed breakdown on how much an aerobatic flight costs. Bookings are made through the booking page, and the practical details are gathered under good to know.

Practicalities: where to stay, what to eat, when to come

  • Accommodation: from campsites and tents to guesthouses and holiday homes. Vama has no large hotels, and on peak-season weekends everything fills up.
  • Food: fish, mussels, straightforward coastal cooking. The terraces change their menus according to what the fishermen bring in, which is a good sign.
  • Season: June and September are the best months if you want the beach without the crush. July and August mean a full village and heavy traffic on the access road.
  • Rainy days: Vama suddenly feels very small. See the list of alternatives in our article on days when it's not beach weather.

The conclusion is simple: Vama Veche is worth it for the atmosphere, but a whole holiday there only works if you leave the village at least every other day. Southern Dobrogea is far more interesting than it looks from the beach.
