From Varna or Balchik to the Romanian coast: one day

If you're on holiday in Varna, Albena, Golden Sands or Balchik, the Romanian border is much closer than it looks on the map. A day spent north of it gives you a coast with a different character: villages with open beaches, a port city with two thousand years of history, and a few things to do that you won't find on the Bulgarian side.

Distances and route

The standard route follows the coast and crosses at the Durankulak / Vama Vecheborder point. As a rough guide, it's a few dozen kilometres from Balchik to the first Romanian towns on the coast, and around a hundred from Varna. Costinești Airfield is about 90 kilometres from Balchik and around 150 from Varna. These are cautious estimates — plan your day with some slack, not to the minute.

Border formalities change over time, so check official sources before you set off. We're not going to set out rules here that may well be out of date by the time you read this.

First stop: Vama Veche and 2 Mai

Just past the border you reach Vama Veche, a village that made its name on its open beach and easy-going atmosphere. There are no large hotels, just terraces, a campsite and a rhythm of its own. A few kilometres north, 2 Mai is the quieter option: a wide beach, a small fishing harbour, old houses.

You can walk between the two villages along the beach. It's a few kilometres, and if you only have a day it's probably the quickest way to get a feel for Romania's southern coast. More detail in our guide to Vama Veche.

Mangalia and the southern resorts

About ten kilometres north of 2 Mai, Mangalia is the oldest town on this stretch of coast, built over the Greek colony of Callatis. You can visit the ancient remains, the archaeology museum and the Esmahan Sultan Mosque, one of the oldest in Romania. The town also has a marina.

Further north comes the string of resorts — Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, Neptun and Olimp — compactly built, with green space and lakes. Neptun is the best placed if you want a break in the shade: forest behind it and two lakes.

Costinești

Costinești sits halfway between Mangalia and Constanța. It has a long beach, a wreck aground close to shore — the cargo ship Evangelia, stranded there since the late 1960s and now the resort's emblem — and a working airfield on the edge of town. For anyone visiting for a day, it's a short, efficient stop: beach, wreck, a meal, and possibly a flight.

Constanța, if you have time

Constanța is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Romania and the only large one on the coast. The old peninsula is best seen on foot:

• The Casino — the restored Art Nouveau building on the seafront, the city's emblem.
• The Museum of National History and Archaeology and the Roman mosaic edifice, on Piața Ovidiu.
• The Carol I Mosque, with a minaret you can climb.
• The Aquarium and The Romanian Naval Museum.
• To the north, the complex with the dolphinarium and planetarium, handy if you're travelling with children.

If you only have one day, Constanța fills it on its own. Combine it with Vama Veche only if you set off early.

Aerobatic flights from Costinești Airfield

The one activity that justifies the trip to Romania by itself is an aerobatic flight from Costinești Airfield. It's about 90 kilometres from Balchik and around 150 from Varna, so entirely doable as a day trip. Book ahead — both because it runs on reservations and because the weather is reconfirmed beforehand.

Vulturașul operates from Costinești Airfield and is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. Flights are made with a certified professional pilot, in an aircraft approved for aerobatics and fitted with a five-point harness. No previous experience is needed: the pilot talks you through everything before take-off.

What to know beforehand

  The minimum age is 10. Children can fly from the age of 10, with both parents present at the airfield.

  The maximum weight is 100 kg. That is a technical limit of the aircraft, not a preference.

  Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00. In summer, the morning slots usually have the calmest air.
• ✓
  The weather is reconfirmed. The team contacts you at least 3 days ahead to confirm flying conditions. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the flight is rescheduled.

  Not only at Costinești. The team travels to other cities around the country from time to time; dates are announced on Instagram and TikTok.

Tips for the day itself

• Set off early. In summer, coastal traffic builds up in the afternoon and queues can form at the border.
• The currency in Romania is the leu; work out in advance how you'll pay, so you're not hunting for solutions on the spot.
• Book in advance anything with fixed times — a flight, an out-of-season museum visit, a table somewhere busy.
• Leave room on the way back. Don't plan anything important for that same evening.
