2 Mai is the kind of place people talk about with a certain caution, afraid it might become too well known and get spoiled. It's a fishing village in Limanu commune, right next to Vama Veche, but with a completely different tempo: quieter, more settled, more bohemian in the old sense of the word. If you want the seaside without the bustle of the resorts, this is where you come.
Atmosphere: bohemian but quiet
2 Mai has a long-standing reputation as a refuge for artists, writers and people looking for the sea without its commercial noise. You won't find big clubs, neon-lit boulevards or tower hotels here. Instead you'll find vine-covered yards, family guesthouses, small terraces and a pace that forces you to slow down. Evenings are spent around the table, with long conversations, not on the dance floor.
What makes the village special is precisely this balance: it has enough life that you won't get bored, but enough quiet that you can truly rest. It's a destination for someone who wants to read a book on the beach, not for someone who wants three parties a night. If you come with resort expectations, you'll be disappointed; if you come for the atmosphere, it's exactly what you're after.
The sandy beach and the wild area
The beach in 2 Mai is wide and has fine sand, more comfortable to sit on than the coarse sand in other parts of the southern coast. The central section, by the village, has a few terraces and laid-out spots, but don't expect endless rows of sun loungers. The further you move from the centre, the more open the beach becomes.
To the north, beyond the village, begins a wild area of beach that stretches towards the clay cliff and towards Mangalia. It's the favourite part for those seeking privacy: no buildings, no music, just sand, water and the cliff behind you. Many also choose it as a naturist beach. Pack water and a parasol, because there's nowhere to buy anything there.
As everywhere on the coast, the sea is moody: days of warm, calm water, followed by a sudden cooling when the wind comes off the open sea. Keep an eye on the warning flag and on days with big waves — rip currents exist even on beaches that look calm.
The fishery and fresh fish
2 Mai is, above all, a fishing village, and that shows best on the plate. The small landing point and the local fishermen bring in Black Sea fish, and the terraces build their menu around whatever was caught that day. A menu that changes from one day to the next is, in fact, the best sign of freshness.
The specialities worth seeking out are fresh grilled fish, mussels and simple seaside cooking, with no fuss. Here you don't eat spectacularly, you eat well. If you can, ask your host or the fishermen when the boats come back — fish bought straight from them in the morning is an experience in itself and a talking point with the locals.
Camping and accommodation
2 Mai has a strong camping tradition. For many, a holiday here means a tent, not a room, and the village has organised campsites close to the beach, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It's a cheap option, well suited to young people or to anyone who wants to be as close to the sea as possible.
Camping
Campsites close to the beach, with a community feel. The classic, budget option for 2 Mai.
Family guesthouses
Holiday houses and small guesthouses, many with a yard. No big hotels — everything is on a village scale.
Fish terraces
Menus that change with the day's catch. Grilled fish, mussels, simple cooking.
Best season
June and September are the ideal months: good weather and an uncrowded beach. In summer, the village fills up.
At the height of the season, in July and August, the village fills up quickly, especially at weekends. If you want real peace and quiet, June or September is best, when the weather is still good but the flow of tourists has thinned out.
2 Mai versus Vama Veche
The two villages are neighbours — a few kilometres apart — and yet they have different personalities. Vama Veche is about nights, music and energy; you go to bed late and the evenings stretch on. 2 Mai is the settled version: quieter, better suited to families, couples and anyone who wants to rest rather than party.
The good news is that you don't have to choose for good. You can walk between 2 Mai and Vama Veche along the beach — a stroll of a few kilometres, with the water beside you the whole way. You can stay in peace in 2 Mai and spend an evening in Vama Veche when you fancy some buzz. Plenty of people choose exactly this combination. If you want details about the noisier neighbour, we've gathered them in the guide about what to do in Vama Veche.
| What you're after | 2 Mai | Vama Veche |
|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Quiet, bohemian, fishing-village feel | Energetic, music, nightlife |
| Pace | Settled, good for resting | Night-owl pace, late to bed |
| Suited to | Families, couples, relaxation | Young people, groups, parties |
| Beach | Fine sand, a wild area to the north | Open, coarser sand |
Surroundings: Vama Veche and Hagieni
2 Mai is a good base for southern Dobrogea, because everything is close by. Besides the walk to Vama Veche, it's worth leaving the village at least once every few days — the area has more to offer than it seems from the beach.
Vama Veche
The neighbour a few kilometres away, reachable on foot along the beach. Good for an evening, when you fancy music and terraces.
Hagieni Forest
A reserve with sub-Mediterranean vegetation, in the interior of southern Dobrogea. A good area for a short hike and birdwatching, outside the hottest hours.
Mangalia
To the north, with the remains of the Callatis colony, the archaeology museum, the Esmahan Sultan Mosque and the marina. Details in the guide about Mangalia.
Limanu
The commune that 2 Mai belongs to has a well-known cave, with long galleries and a history full of legends. Access is restricted — check beforehand.

Getting there: how to reach 2 Mai
2 Mai lies on DN39, the road linking Constanța and Mangalia to the Bulgarian border, passing through Vama Veche. In practice, the village is a few kilometres south of Mangalia and just north of Vama Veche, so whichever direction you come from on the southern coast, you'll get there easily.
By car, it takes about an hour from Constanța on the DN39. At the height of the season, the access road and the entrance to the village get congested, especially at weekends, so allow a little patience at peak times. Once you're there, the village is small and easy to get around on foot or by bike — the distances between 2 Mai, Vama Veche and Limanu are short and relatively flat.
The aerobatic flight at Vama Veche Airfield
Vama Veche Airfield is just about 3 km from 2 Mai, also in Limanu commune — effectively the closest adrenaline activity to the village. It's probably the only option in the area that has nothing to do with either the beach or the terraces, and it fits perfectly into an active morning that won't spoil the rest of your relaxing day.
Vulturașul operates from Vama Veche Airfield and is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. The flights are operated by a certified professional pilot, in an aircraft approved for aerobatics and with a five-point harness, over the southern coast. You don't need any previous experience: the pilot explains everything before take-off.
Smooth Flight
A pleasure flight along the coast, with smooth manoeuvres and no aerobatic figures. Forces stay close to 1G. Ideal for a first flight in a small aircraft, or if you are only after the view. See the package.
Introduction to Aerobatics
Your first real figures — loops, rolls and steep banked turns — at 3–4G. The middle option, for anyone who wants the adrenaline in a controlled dose. See the package.
Full Aerobatic
30 minutes of flight (from engine start to engine shutdown) and 45 minutes for the whole experience, safety briefing included. Loops, rolls, spins and inverted flight, at 4–6G. See the package.
Gift card
Any of the flights can be bought as a gift card, valid for 24 months from purchase. Handy if you want to surprise someone who is on holiday with you. See the gift card.

In conclusion: who 2 Mai is for
2 Mai is for anyone who wants the sea without the show: fine sand, fresh fish, long evenings at the table and real peace and quiet. It's close enough to Vama Veche to reach the buzz whenever you like, but far enough that you can actually rest. And if, one morning, you fancy a bit of adrenaline, the airfield is just a few kilometres away. That's about all it takes to turn a quiet holiday into an unforgettable one.
