Things to do on Bulgaria's northern coast

Bulgaria's northern coast — the strip between the border and Varna — is one of the most varied stretches of shoreline in the region: high cliffs, a dramatic headland, a renowned botanical garden, large resorts and a port city with serious museums. And because it is all packed into roughly a hundred kilometres, you can see a great deal in a short time.

What the northern coast covers, geographically

Heading south from the border, the main points are, in order: Durankulak, Shabla, Kavarna, Cape Kaliakra, Balchik, Albena, Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) and Varna. Distances from Costinești Airfield, in Romania, are short: Balchik is about 90 kilometres away, Kavarna around 110, Albena around 120, Golden Sands around 140 and Varna around 150. In practice, the whole of northern Bulgaria's coast is a day trip from the Romanian coast — and the other way round.

The crossing is at the Vama Veche / Durankulak border point. Rules and formalities change over time, so check official sources before you travel rather than relying on what was written a few years ago.

Balchik: the palace, the garden and the town below the cliff

For many people, Balchik is the main reason for the journey. The town is built in tiers on a steep cliff, with narrow streets dropping towards the sea. Two sights dominate any visit:

Cape Kaliakra and Kavarna

Kaliakra is a narrow headland reaching far out into the sea, with high reddish cliffs and the ruins of a fortress at its tip. It is both a nature reserve and a historic site — a combination that makes it the most photographed spot on Bulgaria's northern coast. You walk out along the headland, and the wind almost never stops, so bring a layer even in summer.

Kavarna, the town nearby, is known for the music events held there in recent years and for its harbour. The surrounding area, towards Shabla and Durankulak, has lagoons, lakes and wetlands that matter for birdlife — a good corner for birdwatching, especially during the migration seasons.

Albena and Golden Sands

The area's two large resorts have quite different characters:

• Albena — a compact resort with a wide, gently shelving beach, clearly aimed at families with children. It is bordered by the Baltata reserve, a floodplain forest that is rare on the Black Sea coast and good for walks in the shade.
• Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) — larger and busier, with hotels packed side by side, a dense nightlife and a nature park directly behind the resort, with walking trails.
• Between them, Kranevo and the St Constantine and Helena area offer quieter alternatives, the latter with a spa tradition and thermal springs.

Varna: the city

Varna is the largest city on the Bulgarian coast and deserves a full day. The main highlights:

• The Archaeological Museum — home to finds from the Varna necropolis, among the oldest worked gold objects ever discovered. The most compelling reason to make the trip.
• The Sea Garden (Primorski Park) — a large park running along the coast, with an aquarium, dolphinarium, terrarium and astronomical observatory.
• The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God — the city's central landmark.
• The Roman baths — the ruins of a large thermal complex, in the old centre.
• The pedestrian centre — shops and cafés, good for an evening.

Outdoor activities

Beyond the sights, the area offers plenty to do, broadly similar to the Romanian coast: water sports in the resorts, boat trips from the harbours, walking in the nature park behind Golden Sands, cycling the clifftop roads between Balchik and Kavarna, and birdwatching in the northern wetlands. Golf is something of a local speciality too, with courses laid out along the coast.

Aerobatic flights from Costinești Airfield

If you've made it to northern Bulgaria's coast, you're already close to something with no local equivalent: Costinești Airfield, in Romania, is about 90 kilometres from Balchik and around 150 from Varna. Vulturașul operates from Costinești Airfield and is the first registered acrobatic training organisation (DTO) in Romania. Flights are made with a certified professional pilot, in an aircraft approved for aerobatics and fitted with a five-point harness. No previous experience is needed: the pilot talks you through everything before take-off.

  The maximum weight is 100 kg. That is a technical limit of the aircraft, not a preference.

  Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:00. In summer, the morning slots usually have the calmest air.

  The weather is reconfirmed. The team contacts you at least 3 days ahead to confirm flying conditions. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the flight is rescheduled.

  Not only at Costinești. The team travels to other cities around the country from time to time; dates are announced on Instagram and TikTok.

Northern Bulgaria's coast is compact enough to see a lot in three or four days, and close enough to Romania that you can combine both shorelines in a single holiday. The best times to come are, as everywhere on the Black Sea, late May to June and September.
